CHEF CODY SHEPPARD
Cody's culinary journey spans over a decade and was honed in a variety of kitchens. A Berkeley
County native, Cody attended Hedgesville High, Blue Ridge CTC, and WVU. After WVU, he
moved on to become a proud alumnus of the esteemed L'academie de Cuisine, one of the
country's top culinary schools, in Gaithersburg, MD. Cody has immersed himself in various
culinary genres. From school food service to prestigious golf clubs such as Pikewood National in
Morgantown, WV to the coveted realm of Michelin-starred kitchens, he has worked alongside
some of the nation's most renowned chefs, including Bryan Voltaggio (VOLT – Frederick, MD),
Justin Severino (Cure – Pittsburgh, PA), Aaron Silverman (Rose’s Luxury, Pineapple and Pearls –
Washington, DC), and Jose Andres (Minibar, Bazaar, Zatinya, Oyamel, World Central Kitchen –
all over the world).
Cody is the chef/co-owner of Martinsburg’s own – Oakwood BBQ Company. Winners of the
2023 Berkeley County Development Authority’s Build Up Berkeley Business Pitch Competition,
Oakwood has been operating since 2019. Specializing in various regional BBQ styles, particularly
central Texas-style brisket, Oakwood offers typical BBQ fare along with fun, eclectic specials like
brisket fried rice and paw paw ‘Nilla pudding. Recently, Oakwood transitioned from a pop-up
style operation to their new brick-n-mortar building in Bedington. You can check out their menu
and schedule at www.oakwoodbbqco.com as well as Instagram and Facebook.
While Cody's weekends are dedicated to Oakwood, his weekdays are spent at the esteemed
Rad Pies housed within Cushwa Brewing in Williamsport, MD. Starting as a part-time role during
the challenging times of the pandemic, Cody's exceptional talent propelled him to become the
Head Corporate Baker for the company. He now oversees the baking operations at the
Williamsport location, their sister restaurant, The White Rabbit Gastropub in Frederick, MD,
and Cushwa and Rad Pies Taproom in Columbia, MD. Cody's remarkable achievements were
recognized on a global stage when his transformation of Rad Pies' Detroit Pan Pizza program
earned them the prestigious title of World's Best Pan Pizza at the International Pizza Challenge
in Las Vegas, the largest pizza competition in the world. In addition to this remarkable feat,
Cody clinched fifth place in the world and first in the Northeast Region of the U.S. for the
Traditional Pizza category. It's worth emphasizing that a good ole boy from Berkeley County,
WV triumphed over competitors from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and even Italy,
excelling at their own craft.
